About the Solids Readiness Checker
The Solids Readiness Checker helps parents determine if their baby is showing the key signs that suggest they are ready to begin solid foods. Whether you’re considering baby-led weaning or spoon-fed purées, knowing when to start is important for safety and healthy development.
What We Check
- Strong head and neck control
- Ability to sit with minimal support
- Tongue-thrust reflex mostly gone
- Opens mouth for spoon or brings hand-to-mouth
- Shows interest in food (watches, reaches, mimics chewing)
- Around 6 months old (premature babies may differ)
How It Works
- Complete the quick checklist of readiness signs
- If most signs are present, the result will be “Likely ready” with safety tips
- If signs are missing, you’ll see “Not yet” and what to watch for before starting
Safety Basics
- Always supervise and keep baby upright in a stable seat
- Offer soft, age-appropriate textures and safe food sizes
